NSSGA NAMES 2009 NATIONAL STARS OF EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNERS Four operations receive association's top honor

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 12-NSSGA today announced the winners of its National Stars of Excellence program for 2009. Member operations from Hedrick Industries, Salisbury, N.C.; Rogers Group, Inc., Nashville, Tenn.; and Vulcan Materials Company, Birmingham, Ala., received top honors. (Two facilities operated by Vulcan were honored.) The four winners, along with all gold award recipients of the Excellence in Safety, Environment and Community Relations for 2009, will be recognized on Feb. 15 during an awards ceremony at NSSGA's Annual Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. "We are honored to recognize four operations with two or more gold awards, each earning the National Stars of Excellence," said NSSGA President and CEO Joy Wilson. "Our members show their commitment to the industry and their communities every day, and this is just a small way of demonstrating to everyone the remarkable contributions aggregate producers make to America's economy, our people, the environment, and our quality of life."

"Our 2009 National Stars of Excellence winners have every reason to be proud of their achievements," said NSSGA Chairman of the Board Jerry Geraghty, president and CEO, Rogers Group, Inc. "I congratulate each of these four operations for their commitment to outstanding corporate citizenship and support of their communities."

NSSGA's National Stars of Excellence program began in 2001 and is presented to those operations earning two or more of any of the following gold awards over a five-year period: Safety Excellence, Environmental Excellence and Excellence in Community Relations. Each operation is awarded a number of stars corresponding to the number of gold awards won (two or three) and is identified as a Two- or Three-Star Award winner.

Based near the nation's capital, NSSGA is the world's largest mining association by product volume. Its member companies represent more than 92 percent of the crushed stone and 75 percent of the sand and gravel produced annually in the U.S. and approximately 118,000 working men and women in the aggregates industry. During 2008, a total of nearly more than 2.3 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel, valued at $21 billion, were produced and sold in the United States.
