The Industrial Health Council (IHC) began in 1947 as a joint effort of the Jefferson County Department of Health and the Health Committee of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. From this beginning the IHC has grown to an organization that serves clients in many of the states in the continental US. The IHC, a private not-for-profit corporation, is governed by a Board of Directors which is comprised of representatives (CEO or their designee) of the companies for whom the IHC provides services. This is is a self perpetuating group of twenty-one members. There are six additional physician Directors who are appointed to the Board and make up the Medical Advisory Committee. This composition of Directors makes the IHC unique in the industry and positions us to be more aware of, and responsive to, the needs and requirements of the people we serve.
The IHC has countless examples of situations in which early detection of an abnormality as part of our screening process has led to diagnosis and treatment which greatly reduced lost time from the job and even may have saved lives.
